Weekly Radar | Hungary Now | Week 40

— tourism, mobility, demand and the connections that still need to be built.

August changed the tone of the season.

Domestic tourism remained more resilient, while international demand weakened. Lake Balaton once again showed how strong domestic recognition can coexist with a structural internationalisation problem. In Pécs, the short-lived Munich air connection demonstrated how much strategic value regional connectivity can create — and how quickly that value can disappear when the operating model is not resilient enough.

This week’s weekly radar. looks beyond the individual headlines and asks a more important question: what actually turns access, visibility and infrastructure into sustainable tourism value?

Inside this issue:

  • why Hungary’s summer ended with a warning sign rather than a simple slowdown;

  • what the August numbers reveal about domestic and international demand;

  • why Lake Balaton still has an internationalisation challenge;

  • what the Pécs–Munich route teaches us about regional aviation;

  • how Railway 71 could become a genuine tourism corridor connecting Fót, Veresegyház, Vácrátót and Vác;

  • and why connectivity is not a tourism product until destinations build the experience, distribution, ownership and resilience around it.

The central conclusion of this issue is simple:

Hungary is not short of tourism assets. It is short of stronger connections between them.
